About the Department

The aim of the Department of Information and Communication Technology is to train students to become successful ICT and Data Science professionals. This entails equipping students with scientific and technical knowledge and transferrable skills to provide ICT and Data Science solutions coupled with ability to plan and manage Data and ICT services effectively. Graduates from programmes in the Department are expected to be able to manage and maintain computer networks, hardware and software; establish and manage ICT-related businesses; conduct ICT-related research and consultancies, provide generic expertise on ICT’s, and Provide Big Data Services and Solutions. MZUNI has developed a reputation for producing innovative Data Science and ICT students, some of whom have established their own businesses. The Department is also active in providing ICT and Data Science related solutions to both the private and public sector. In terms of training, the department is providing computer access and ICT training to individuals, schools, and communities throughout the region via both generic, and weekend programmes.

Partnerships and Collaborations

The ICT department in conjunction with FAIR Denmark has distributed used computers to selected Secondary Schools. The computers are used for teaching computer studies in forms three and four. Currently about eighteen Secondary Schools in the Northern Region have benefited from this Project.

The department is also in collaboration with the University College of Cork Health Information System Research Centre in conducting E-Health Research focusing on lethal diseases affecting under five children. Activities now involve evaluating effectiveness of electronic integrated management of Child Illness based on the World Health Organization’s IMCI.

Google-Tides STEM project also conducted a training of the trainers in Critical thinking Problem Solving using Python Programming.

With partnership with the Ministry of Education and Directorate of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI) the Department has pioneered an innovation called MiLAB which is a Virtual(gamefied) Science laboratory that offers an opportunity for science experiments to Community Day secondary schools, and secondary school that do not have science laboratories.

The Department has been very instrumental in developing different solutions, and information systems for the University, one of such systems being the Students Management Information System (SMIS)

The department has also partnered with Telecom Networks Malawi, Zodiak, Calseberg Malawi, Vision Fund, Malawi Telecommunications Limited, TechNix Malawi, Teltech Communications, OCL, Standard Bank, Techsoft, Grant Plus, Ctech Systems, Luke International, Northern Region Water Board, CFAO and PLAN International for student interns.

Research, Outreach and Publications

Our department and research teams actively publish in peer-reviewed journals, contributing valuable insights to the fields of ICT, Cybersecurity and Data Science. These publications reflect our commitment to academic excellence and our drive to address pressing global challenges.

Outreach Programmes

The department distributed computers and Digital Library in Secondary Schools under the FAIR project. In 2024, the Department conducted an ICT boot camp for females in partnership with UN Women.

Students Innovation

Students have developed several projects including; mHealth (Intelligent Dietician and Smart Health Consultancy), EdTech (School Enterprise Resource Planning Software), Project Management (Project Management and Budget Training Software) and ICT4Admin (Workflow Management Systems and E-Voting), Personal Finance Tracker, eTourguide, Digital Library using Raspberry PI3 and MiLab, a virtual science laboratory app.
