About the Department
The Department of Information Sciences is one of the departments in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Mzuzu University (MZUNI). The Department was established in 2003. Until 2016, the Department operated under the Faculty of Information Science and Communications. In 2016, MZUNI restructured its faculties and departments and as part of this process, the then Department of Library and Information Science moved from the defunct Faculty of Information Science and Communications to the new Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; in the same year, the Department adopted a new nomenclature, changing from the Department of Library and Information Science to the Department of Information Sciences. The vision of the Department is to become a centre of excellence in the provision of education, training and research that promotes information sciences issues for the social, political, and economic development of individuals and communities in Malawi and beyond. The mission of the Department is to provide high quality education to prospective information sciences specialists planning to embark on different careers in the private and public sectors.
The Department is currently offering the following programmes: Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) and Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS). The core functions/mandate of the Department are to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students, train undergraduate and postgraduate students in information sciences research, carry out research and consultancies in various information sciences and socio-economic areas, provide consultancy services to various institutions and conduct community outreach activities in information sciences.
